If there was a culture existing hundreds of years spanning continents in which a certain symbol typically meant a certain thing, you are able to use that as content in the lattice.

You can't create arbitrary cyphers easily because if the enslavers decide to decohere tgey can scramble your cyphers. But they can't really regulate your psychic feel for hundreds, thousands of years and continents worth of culture between living ISBEs using physical bodies.
