The US department of energy has said energy secretary Jennifer Granholm and under-secretary for nuclear security Jill Hruby will announce “a major scientific breakthrough” at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory on Tuesday. The department declined to comment further.

The laboratory confirmed that a successful experiment had recently taken place at its National Ignition Facility but said analysis of the results was ongoing.

“Initial diagnostic data suggests another successful experiment at the National Ignition Facility. However, the exact yield is still being determined and we can’t confirm that it is over the threshold at this time,” it said. “That analysis is in process, so publishing the information . . . before that process is complete would be inaccurate.”

There’s an Icarian quality to it, of course, a humbling from decades of high expectations that are rarely met. But fusion researchers press on toward an elusive goal, even if it may not be attained by any generation alive today. “I think we should look at this with optimism,” says Dmitri Orlov, a research scientist at the University of California, San Diego who studies tokamak design. “Today is like watching a baby learning to walk. Eventually, it will run a marathon.”

LLNL’s experiment surpassed the fusion threshold by delivering 2.05 megajoules (MJ) of energy to the target, resulting in 3.15 MJ of fusion energy output, demonstrating for the first time a most fundamental science basis for inertial fusion energy (IFE). Many advanced science and technology developments are still needed to achieve simple, affordable IFE to power homes and businesses, and DOE is currently restarting a broad-based, coordinated IFE program in the United States. Combined with private-sector investment, there is a lot of momentum to drive rapid progress toward fusion commercialization.

Anything related to governments regarding energy breakthroughs I just don't trust.

They have been systemicly smothered every potential breakthrough so far in collaboration with big corporations.

I am curious about what was said on Joe Rohan's Hancock&Randall episode weeks ago though. It was said something big energywise was coming out to implement in current cars too, but that was supposedly unrelated to government involvement. Mazda was involved too in that wanting to cooperate with the inventory and investing big dums of money to experiment and implement the tech.

I don't agree Alex, yes the government can suppress energy breakthroughs etc... But eventually fossil fuels a 100% thing that's gonna happen will runout and then someone will have to find a way to make energy from something.

It's logically in everyone's interest that there is a breakthrough in clean energy, especially for a U.S gov that doesn't want to rely on Middle East oil in a politically unstable region of the planet.

Fact is the country that is able to make a stable source of nuclear fusion power commercially will obviously dominate the world when the oil runs out. For the U.S gov to turn away from such an opportunity doesn't really make any sense. Which explains why this discovery is has been made at Livermore labs in California.

Besides it's only a proof of concept that a net energy gain in fusion is possible. We're not even 1% of the way to the goal. The real test will be to see if they can sustain a stable fusion reaction in a reactor core ( tomahawk, stellarator) for an endless period of time producing net energy that can be converted to electricity.

I guess I am a lot more skeptical than you when it comes to these things.

How many times have we heard that we are close to a breakthrough. And how many times have we read stories that there were already major breakthroughs in the past, like a car running on water, that never saw the light,bare the main people involved that were killed. We even have Nikolas Tesla videos here on Farsight were you can question what happened to his most brilliant inventions that were supposedly related to free energy.

America is not even really depending on the Middle East. They were Energy-Independend under Trump, but lots of energy winning operations then got shut down by Biden. So as a matter of fact, that's a matter of choice.

Bottemline for me, I think the Deep State and other much more powerful actors are running the show when it comes to free energy. Not the president, Congress, Democrats or Republicans. Whenever the world is about to be freed, I believe these 'planet-controlling' bad entities that have captivated this planet throughout history, will come into action and use their powers to keep the planet under their control. And free energy definitely seems not to be on their agenda.

If there ever is going to be a revolution in energy, I believe is has to be a small independent operating group with very smart and mentally strong people who can't be lured into selling their invention to higher powers who will try to stop this. Possibly backed by strong brilliant persons like Elon Musk who already have enough money, and are just mainly motivated to improve things for humanity. That's where I would put my money. But happy to be proved wrong.

I think it's pretty naive of everyone to assume that there will be any sort of responsible use of free energy. Even if we had limitless clean fusion energy right now, it will not really be free because the most selfish and greedy people on the planet will use it to make the world an even more dysfunctional place to live.

Whatever you call it deep state, illuminati etc... it's the samething. Where do these come from to begin with? They're not aliens you know? They're people like us and they come from the same population sample. We're not any better than them because we're all human just the same, you'd make the same corrupt decisions if you were in a place of power.

NIF was not designed with commercial fusion energy in mind — and many researchers doubt that laser-driven fusion will be the approach that ultimately yields fusion energy. But Campbell believes that its latest success could boost confidence in the promise of laser fusion power and open the door to a programme focused on energy applications. “This is absolutely necessary to have the credibility to sell an energy programme,” he says.

Lawrence Livermore laboratory director Kim Budil described the achievement as a proof of concept. “I don’t want to give you a sense that we’re going to plug the NIF into the grid: that is definitely not how this works,” she said during a press conference in Washington DC. “But this is the fundamental building block of an inertial confinement fusion power scheme.”
