It seems like that most people even here on the forums still don't know this, including AI.
What is the true purpose of morality? What even is morality to begin with?
Definition: Morality is a system of principles used to evaluate behavior as right or wrong.
This doesn't mean that being moral makes you a good person, because the system of principles you use to discern right and wrong could be objectively false. And this is what confuses most people.
Morality is not judgement – morality is a methodology for judgement.
Here's a simple example:
A few days ago, a clip of Tucker Carlson talking to US senator Ted Cruz went viral. In that clip, Ted Cruz explained that he believes that he needs to support Israel in order to be blessed. That's one of his principles: helping Israel = right, not helping Israel = wrong.
This is subjective morality, based on what he learned as a child in Sunday school.
What you need to understand is: The main purpose of moral principles is that you don't have to think anymore. It's essentially like programming. If one asks you to discern right and wrong, the principle will tell you – if this, then that.
But the problem with that methodology is: Principles can be anything. For example, believing that all reptilians are bad and therefore must be killed would also be a moral principle. From the viewpoint of a being that believes in this principle, killing a reptilian just because it's a reptilian could be deemed "good".
So, the question is not whether someone is moral or not. Everybody is, because everybody is acting upon principles.
The actual question is: Does your morality align with objective reality?
Killing a reptilian just because it's a reptilian would cause harm, obviously. Most people now ask: Is that harm good or bad? It depends, right? What if I told you that this is not the right question, at least not if you want to be objective. The right question is: How could killing another being be incorrect in a logical sense? (Because the universe is a logical construct.)
And the answer is fairly simple: Killing another being is logically incorrect because you don't own that being. You could claim you own that being, and maybe it even surrenders, but that doesn't change the fact that every being naturally owns itself. In the same way, you could claim to be an elephant, while in fact you are not. Just saying it doesn't change reality.
Summary:
The purpose of morality is to evaluate behavior as right or wrong.
The purpose of universal morality is to evaluate behavior as right or wrong based on objective reality.
