Humans don't really do much with out feeling a bit of pain. The trick is enough to get curious but not enough to paralyze, there is a strike zone for this.

Some humans will be paralyzed, because waking up in a prison will catch them off guard.

Some humans won't be paralyzed, because they already know the uncomfortable truth, and want to change it.
