Whoops (hit submit accidently) / he doesn’t even get into the interesting distinction around those 3 concepts (gehenna etc) in greek those he is using greek and not aramaic there. There is an unfortunate historical thing that happens with the translation under jerome which augustine later picks up theologically and flattens those words down to infernum or hell and loses the subtle distinctions between them to make a theological move that imo was unfortunate.
He doesn’t need to go to aramaic for repentance but can just use the hebrew which does mean return. And he’s using a lot of his own desired translation into
it. though i do agree that the word repent has been limited to a guilt based juridical focus, while it’s semantic domain is a lot larger.
So while i like his overall point of using original
languages his methodology is sloppy and largely groundless. all of us try to make the historical jesus into our own image. this has been well documented i the historical jesus movement in scholarship and i think the author is doing that here.
