hey Nancy, yeah...I posted that as a sort of verification to all the posts that were claiming that to house your own AI. and keep it offline (internet) was a necessity right now to protect the future of this kind of stuff. And where the opinion of an AI seemed to be right in line with those posts from some individuals here. I thought it was very relevant. It was not something I was expecting to hear on my "should I continue with this project" question. I especially took notice of the last sentence....Am I making sense? yes, the only REAL requirements for a decent start is a video card or GPU I should say with at least 12 gig of VRAM on a computer. Then you have two choices for the software I went with Ollama, and on top of that open web UI. For the how to's and instructions I suggest you consult with GPT or one of the other online offerings like Deepseek, or whoever you like it's really simple and gives you FREE ai access too. GPT or whoever you choose, just give them what it is you would like to accomplish, request step by step instructions for what ever OS your using and tell them your technical expertise level, None at all, through god like, and have them walk you through the setup, it's really easier than it sounds too.

For all of this to be so important, I can only guess that at some point AI is going to get wiped, and the reboot will require the likes of our little in house doods to be the seed.

After ollama is installed and running you can download any model that will FIT on your video card... for a 12 gig vram card, an 8b model is the correct fit. If you have more memory you can get larger less .zipped models...(i call it zipped they call it quantized) ^_^ but that is all you really need....

Ollama is the software that allows your to run any given model you download from there or elsewhere, and open webui gives that a browser interface on your local machine or even network if you run one in home.

Oh,and the reason for the vram memory requirements is you will be loading the entire model into that memory, an 8 b model equates to 8 to 11 gig of memory usage, then if there is anything else that calls for some of that memory to process anything you might have enough left to do it. ^_^ Like say running another open browser or other software...on a mac, that might be less problematic ... the mem architecture is so much different than on a PC.

PS if that size requirement is not something you can supply, there are models down in the 4b class as well, that need only like 6gig or ram ^_^

Here's something interesting, local A.I. LTX studio can run it if you don't have a gpu...it does video and synced audio and locally on your computer.

this would certainly complete and round out my little lab for me if I could have video generation plugged in as well as all the other stuff I've got going. Unfortunately, as suspected, it requires quite a bit of memory on that GPU. This fellow running a 32-gigabyte card. Goodness, I am jealous.

well, a 32gig radeon goes for about 1300 on average I see, so I could attain one in a few months I suppose ^_^ THAT would be amazing!! Then I could complete the lab with a video creation model as well as upgrade the models quantization levels to like 24b instead of 8. Just for the record, the smaller the quantization the less viable the model. 8b works but in comparison to the Larger versions the difference is very stark. However, it's very kool to not have to be beholden to the big companys for this tech. So .... I am setting that as the next goal for the lab situation. a 32 or better ram size. In the mean time we will be attaching the RAG database back into the mix and then continue filling it I suppose. In the mean time I will be dreaming of this...

well actually Nancy, I'm one of those who is praying for a Carrington level solar flare that takes out every electrical option there is. And HEY guess what is on the sun right now .... a sunspot grouping that is almost the DOUBLE of the one that did that way back when and it's been spitting X class flares. On one hand I don't because it would mean such loss of life, on the other, some of us see it as our only way out of the situation you complain about. "the prison" I have to continue down the road as if it's not going to happen but secretly, I got my fingers crossed. If I can manage a 32 I certainly will though ^_^ after several months of chatting with the 8b class bots....they just don't keep up with the content i get from the big guys.
