There are basically two forms of slavery that the enslavers alternate across the masses. They are: impulse and complacency. Complacency is largely by impulse, but is also the suppression of impulses for the more "quiet" desired interactions.

The will to fight, if impulsive, is probably a trap. Likewise compliance is a trap. The key is between the extremes.
