Heath Ledger's joker changed my life. Quite literally.
Before the movie I was very morbid, I don't think I even smiled for a year. I hated anyone who looked happy. This world is just not a happy situation overall.
Somehow this villain made more sense to me. He didn't offer a complete philosophy. But he brought forward what is probably a nietzchen adaptation, a critique of modern society. We are filled with schemers. And the schemes are really just attempts to deny the real mess.
But humor exists to face the less comfortable with an embrace of reality. Insisting on only "light" humor is missing the point.
I believe there are different types of humor. And despite what some may think is a desensitizing means when dark humor arises, I think there are times that it ushers in reality with an immediate dose that insists on boldness, instantaneous reception, and questions the paradigm.
I don't want humor to forget and move on. I want it to stare us in the face and drive us forward, rather than to experience the trauma as traumatic.
And if that makes no sense, I am not a legend of perfect rationale.
