What's the purpose of the red eyes?

Where did they come from?

What happened to them?

There has been mixed testimony about the red eyes being more lilac, like a film covering, and their skin is naturally more grey white, as if their unprotected skin rapidly melanised. I made a thread about this, I really want to know what happened to them too.
