The Black Hawk manufacturer Sikorsky has been awarded a €5.5 million contract by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to install the company’s ALIAS/MATRIX flight autonomy system in the US Army’s experimental UH-60M Black Hawk fly-by-wire helicopter. The US Army Combat Capabilities Development Command (DEVCOM) intends to use this upgraded aircraft – designated MX – to test and evaluate various autonomy capabilities – from single-pilot operation to completely unmanned flight.©Military News“Autonomous aircraft will reduce pilot workload, dramatically improve flight safety and give commanders the flexibility to execute complex missions in contested and crowded battlespaces day or night and in all weather conditions,” said Rich Benton, vice president and general manager of Sikorsky. As part of “ALIAS 2020”, Sikorsky provided the hardware and technical support for the installation of the fly-by-wire flight control system in the Black Hawk. In combination with the MATRIX autonomy system, the helicopter becomes an almost exact copy of the Sikorsky UH-60A helicopter with fly-by-wire control and optional pilot, who has tested the MATRIX autonomy in numerous flight hours. The optionally controlled Black Hawk 2022 was demonstrated for the first time as part of a joint “Convergence” project. At that time, Sikorsky and DARPA demonstrated to the US Army how the Black Hawk helicopter can reliably carry out internal and external cargo supply missions without people on board.
